About the Playwrights, 2009 - 2010 Fresh Flavas
 

Caleen Sinnette Jennings is Professor of Theatre at American University in Washington, D.C., where she received the university’s 2003 Scholar/Teacher of the Year Award.  She is a two-time Helen Hayes Award nominee for Outstanding New Play.  In 2002 she received the Heideman Award from Actor’s Theatre of Louisville for her play Classyass, which has been published in five anthologies.   In 1999 she received a $10,000 grant from the Kennedy Center’s Fund for New American Plays.  Seven of her plays are published by Dramatic Publishing Company and two with New Plays, Incorporated. She has been produced at the Kennedy Center and the Folger Elizabethan theatre among other venues.


Samm-Art Williams was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and grew up in Burgaw, North Carolina. He attended Morgan State College in Baltimore, Maryland, graduating with a B.A. Degree in Political Science and of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Pi chapter. His plays include: Home, The Musical, Conversations On A Dirt Road, The Dance On Widows’ Row and The Waiting Room, which was commissioned by the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. Revival, two one-act plays, was commissioned by the Actors Theatre of Louisville. Other plays include: A Love Play, Welcome to Black River, and Eyes of the American. Home, directed by Douglas Turner Ward, received a Tony nomination in the category of Best Broadway Play, the Outer Critics Circle Award, Drama Desk Nomination, NAACP Image Award and the North Carolina Governor’s Award. Samm received the Guggenheim Fellowship, The National Endowment for The Arts Fellowship for Playwriting in 1981, and The Roanoke Island Historical Association’s Morrison Award.


Thomas Bryant teaches English courses at Virginia Highlands Community College.  He has a BA in English, and an MA in Screenwriting & Film Studies from Hollins University.  His screenplay ALL RISE placed 2nd in the 2001 Hollywood Discovery Awards contest, and his script JUST SUPPOSE was a semifinalist in the 2007 PAGE Awards contest.  In total, he has written nine feature-length screenplays, three stage plays, and published the graphic novel “Daniel: Prophet of Dreams” through Alias Enterprises.
