On July 10th at the 1924 Paris Olympics the Finnish runner, Paavo Nurmi wins both the 1500 and 5000m competitions within two hours of one another. In his career, Nurmi established 22 official world records at distances between 1500 metres and 20 kilometres.

On August 28, 1924, in Georgia there was an uprising where Georgia revolts in opposition to rule by the Soviet Union in an abortive insurrection. In November, the very last known sighting of a California grizzly bear is documented, by Colonel John R. White at Sequoia National Park. This grizzly bear was especially adored because of its splendor, size, and power and it was a symbol of the state of California with the state sometimes known as being the "Bear State" because of that. Finally on December 30th 1924, the American astronomer Edwin Hubble proclaims that Andromeda, previously thought to just be a nebula, can be another galaxy. He also announced that the Milky Way that we are a part of is only one of many such galaxies in the universe. He has a crucial role in creating the field of extragalactic astronomy and consequently the Hubble telescope was named in his honour.
