Here are some guidelines for doing your own mold removal.

Safety First

When handling mold, always wear heavy gloves, a face mask, and goggles. Moving materials around are going to kick toxic spores up into the air, and you don't want to be sucking them directly into your lungs. They can irritate eyes, skin, and anything else they come in contact with as well. Make sure every area where you are working is sealed off from others, and well ventilated with outside air.

Cleaning It Up

Mold can be cleaned from non-porous materials like tiles, but from porous materials, it is impossible to completely remove. You can scrub non-porous materials with soap and water, and then disinfect with detergent, bleach, or other household materials.

Make sure the moldy material is wet while you clean because dry mold will send spores into the air. Scrub well and it should come right off.

Disinfect The Area

Once you've got the materials out, you need to disinfect them to keep them from growing back. Spray the area twice with a strong disinfectant. For a big job like this, it is best to use the heavy stuff professional cleaners use.

If your removal of mold is too much, or you're unsure it's safe, talk to a mold specialist. They can ensure the job gets done right.
